Support “Alaxú Padaxú – Ikaria Art House“ for creative workshops
“Alaxú Padaxú – the Ikaria Art House” is an art cooperative located in Christos Raches, where they organise a large variety of art-workshops for children and adults. But as the energy crisis and the increase in prices has also hit Ikaria badly, the Ikaria Art House was facing problems in covering their running costs to make it through winter 2022/2023. On that background, we decided to support their activities.

The story behind the project
“Alaxú Padaxú – Ikaria Art House” was founded in 2020 by five dedicated young people as an art cooperative. It is located in Christos Raches, where they are renting a space to organise workshops, and where they’ve also opened a concept store and an art-themed workshop.
Their aim? To get involved in a varity of art practices and to exchange with the local community to promote inspiration, collaborative creation and educational initiatives.
Over the last two years Alaxú Padaxú was a true success story, as many Ikarians – both children and adults – followed their thematic workshops … a clear sign that Alaxú Padaxú not only ‚fills a gap‘ in the field of creative activities on the island, but through its holistic approach the participants also have a chance to learn a lot about art and to express themselves in many different, colourful ways.
But as the energy crisis and the increase in prices has also hit Ikaria badly, the Ikaria Art House was facing problems in covering their running costs to make it through winter 2022/2023.
When “Alaxú Padaxú” and Friends of Ikaria discussed different possibilities about how „Friends of Ikaria“ might help the art cooperative to continue their work., focus was given to covering their basic costs for the next few months, such as rent, energy expenses, internet and materials for the workshops. Besides this, the cooperative is developing plans to ensure their existence in the mid to long term. Among others, this would mean extending their activities, for instance by organizing workshops in other parts of the island.
As an association with the goal to support projects on Ikaria in the field of education, culture, art and creativity, „Friends of Ikaria“were determined to find the necessary funding to support the Alaxú Padaxú art cooperative.
And we were very lucky in finding a sponsor! We were able to send 1,500 EUR to the art cooperative Alaxú Padaxú by early November 2022, to cover their basic costs for the next 3 months.
Through “Alaxú Padaxú – Ikaria Art House” we have learned what a difference art and creativity can make in a small community.We hope this money will help them to continue their great work for the young, and not so young Ikarians. Because, what would life be without art, creativity, laughter and colours?
